Toward a standard format for describing objects in digital models
The deployment of building information modeling (BIM) depends on its full adoption by all construction and urban development trades. This new working method enables the various stakeholders in a project to share all information about the "objects” in a digital model of the building and city, beyond just visual representation.
Greywater recycling: from concept to assessment
In October 2015, WisElement, a VSE, took advantage of the CSTB’s innovation advisory and support service, Ariane. Since then, it has been advancing step-by-step to increase the reliability of its innovative device for the instant recovery of heat from shower greywater. In 2016, the CSTB initiated a study of the technical and regulatory aspects of the innovation in the concept phase. The results may support a request for Technical Approval in 2017.
Improving assessment of summer thermal comfort in timber-framed buildings
A study entrusted by the public authorities and timber companies to four partners – FCBA, Nobatek, Cerema and the CSTB – produced new methods for calculating moisture transfer in the interior walls of timber construction. This will improve assessments of summer thermal comfort in this type of building.
A chimney that resists hurricanes and improves natural ventilation
The CSTB has developed a hurricane-resistant chimney, which reinforces houses in hot regions subject to hurricanes. This innovation enables a building to withstand a hurricane and gives it optimal natural ventilation, reducing the need for air conditioning.
Using BIM in technical inspections
The digital transition in the construction industry is a revolution involving the entire chain of stakeholders at each step of a project, so that the advantages of BIM for productivity and quality can be as beneficial as possible. In a project, compliance with the rules of the trade is verified by a certified control office, beginning with the design phase of the structures and continuing until the work is completed.
Urban swales to improve stormwater management
In urban areas, stormwater can cause pollution and floods as a consequence of increasing urbanization, which makes ground impermeable. As part of an R&D partnership project called Matriochkas, the CSTB is working with IFSTTAR Nantes, Centrale Nantes, the City of Nantes and the Loire-Brittany Water Agency on an urban stormwater swale system that enables permeation and retention. The CSTB is testing this full-scale solution at its Aquasim test facility.
Safety and wind comfort for the Cultural Center of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation
In the center of a large city park facing the sea, south of Athens, the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera have relocated to exceptional new buildings designed by architect Renzo Piano. The design of these buildings, inaugurated in early 2017, relied on the expertise of the CSTB in two areas: aerodynamics in engineering works and wind comfort in urban spaces.
Stepped timber frame with invisible seams
Wooden beams make up the stepped structure of the huge roof covering the Aqualagon, the future water park of Marne-la-Vallée. The beams were made by Arbonis, using an innovative assembly technique, which received a favorable ATEx assessment in early 2016.
Insulated concrete form walls: four technological leaps supported by the CSTB
2016: The industrial companies GBE and Lafarge received a Technical Approval for a cast-in-situ wall with integrated insulation and concrete skin. This system has just taken its fourth technological leap, 20 years after the emergence of the first solution of its kind on the market. The CSTB has supported the advancement of this innovation since its beginnings. Working alongside the stakeholders through the assessment procedure, the CSTB helps ensure the safety and stability of their system.
Laboratory measurements and on-site measurements: getting closer
Thermal and acoustic insulation made of recycled paper, or cellulose wadding, is used in loose fill or in panels in buildings. A study initiated by a working group of industrial manufacturers with the CSTB explored to what extent the thickness of this loose fill insulation is subject to settling, over time. This is a major challenge in the context of energy transition. The goal is to assess this component's actual contribution to the energy performance of the building envelope.
